Fab Cafe Appearance - April 15, 2002
Thanks to Shelly for all her stories and pictures!
On Monday evening April 15th I went to the Fab Cafe in Manchester to
see David Soul. I was meeting up with Debbie (the drum) and Robbin who had
just flew over from Missouri that morning. I arrived at the Fab Cafe at 6.00pm
just as the doors opened and waited outside for Debbie and Robbin. They
arrived shortly after, so the three of us decided to go to McDonalds.
All the time we were there Robbin kept looking out of the window,
worried that the Fab Cafe would fill up and we wouldn't be able to get a seat.
At around 6.30pm we went to the Fab Cafe and got ourselves seated right near
the spot where David would be speaking (there was a microphone set up with a
stool).
At around 7.00pm Joanne another DSAC member arrived with her mum so we all
sat together, I noticed at another table sat Sharon (another DSAC member) with
her two nieces Lana and Gemma, so Robbin and I went over to talk to them. My
brother Dale arrived at about 8.30pm and we all sat in anticipation waiting
for David's arrival.
David arrived at approximately 8.45pm and headed straight for the bar to
get a drink. My friend Debbie was already at the bar and as David walked past
her he gave her a high hand shake and you could see her smile for miles
around. My brother Dale decided to saunter over to the bar to get a drink and
to talk to David, I sat stunned that he could just go talk to David like that.
I was a nervous wreck hahahaha. After what seemed like ages I decided to go to
the bar myself with my digital camera to see if I could get a pic of David.
When my brother saw me he said, "You've got to be joking. Give the man a
chance to get a drink." At which David smiled *melt*.
Dale was talking to David about London and asked him if he ever thought
about moving to Manchester, David just said, "Maybe, who knows?" At that
point, David looked at me with my camera and asked me if I was gonna use it.
My silly brother said, "Yeah, she wants you to take a pic of her and me." I
said, "Don't be silly, you're my brother -- I see you all the time. I
mean David."
David laughed and pulled me close to him, so I gave my camera to Dale and
he took that gorgeous pic of David and I which I will treasure forever. Debbie
and Robbin had their pics taken with THE man, too. David had some pics taken
with lots of people and by this time it was 9.00pm.
We went back to our seats just as a voice said, "Ladies and gentleman, back
by popular demand, Mr. David Soul.". Everyone clapped and David took his seat
at the microphone. David started off telling us all about 'Deathtrap' the play
he is starring in at the moment and his love of the theatre. Then we were all
asked if there were any questions for David. Lot's of interesting questions
were asked by people and David took the time to answer each one.
I asked him if when he came to do his new album if it would feature new or
old songs. David said he would love to do new stuff with maybe a couple of old
songs thrown in. My brother, Dale, asked David if he could do a remake of any
song which two would he choose. David sat and thought for a while then
said, "I'd love to do 'Surrender to me,' but not sure about another one. I
would have to sit and think some more."
After everyone had finished with the questions, Robbin gave David a tape
that she had made with David singing in German. She was a nervous wreck when
she came back to our table and who could blame her. We noticed David had
disappeared and so had my brother (typical). After a while Dale returned and
told us he had been chatting to David in the toilets (huh typical of Dale).
Dale said David was really cool and had asked if Dale thought it all had gone
well and if he thought David might have offended anyone (what a gentleman).
David went to the bar to get a drink then sat at a table, people kept going
and asking him to sign stuff so I got David's autograph and shook his hand and
wished him luck with the play. He pulled me to him, kissed my cheek and
said, "Thank you." All too quickly it was time to go. But I knew I would
be seeing David the next night at the Lowry in Manchester for the first
showing of 'Deathtrap'.
