A Chorus Line, October 1996

Recorded for Radio

Venue: Golders Green Hippodrome Theatre, London

The story is centered on a casting day for a show. Director Zack - played by David - is auditioning and has the hopefuls introduce themselves one by one. Then he makes a short list and asks those dancers to tell him something about themselves.

This is the core of the show as each artist steps forward to tell their story, sometimes speaking but more often in song. Some are cheeky, some flippant or brazen and some are sad. One young man is reluctant to tell his story and Zack tells them all to 'take five'. In the privacy of the break, he gets the young man to open up to him and discovers that he had a very difficult relationship with his parents that got worse when he admitted to them that he was gay. But when he is offered a tour on a show he overhears his father telling the producer to 'take care of my son'. It is the first time he has heard his father say anything like that. He becomes very emotional ant that point and Zack steps forward to comfort him with a kindly embrace.

One member of the troupe is Cassie who, it transpires, Zack knows. They had a relationship once and she walked out on him when she had a promise of success. The promise was unfulfilled though and now she is desperate for work.

Zack is reluctant to hire her as she has been a headliner and he doesn't think she will fit in a chrous line again. She pleads with him for a chance and he gives in, letting her dance a routine that was both balletic and modern. But when Zack comes to make his final decision, Cassie is not included. He confronts her about leaving him without even saying goodbye and the two part without resolving their differences.
