He had nothing to give
So from the wall
He lived behind
He found the bricks
That were the greenest with moss
And cut them out
With a mason's bit
And gave the most beautiful
To his friends
A green-sided brick
For each friend
And his wall was gone.
Words and music by Gardner McKay/David Soul
He bought her a flower at the fair
1927 Kansas City
Said he liked the color of her hair
Then he walked her home and told her she was pretty
Then they spent a little while
Letting their hearts learn to smile
Doing things that lovers always do
He said "How many kids?" She said "A few"
And it's 1927 Kansas CIty
Folks were drivin' round in their stuts bearcats
With straw hats, parasols, the fashion of the day
Summer nights with ukulele strumming
They were humming to the tune of moonlight bay
Batchtub gin and movie stars
Two more payments and the baby's ours
It's the little things that make this live so sweet
When your only worries were your two sore feet
From dancin' in the street in Kansas City
So fine the little ol' couple in love
Space in time the little ol' couple in love
Nowadays there's silver in her hair
The kids have come and gone like seasons turning
Forty years since they met at the fair
But he still brings her flowers in the morning
Knowing when the shadows fall
Life's a circle after all
Reminding her their love can never end
Suddenly she's just a girl again
And it's 1927 Kansas City
Words and music by Mike Reilly
Like a bird on a wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I've tried in my way to be free
Like a worm on a hook
Like a knight in an old fashioned book
I've saved all my ribbons for thee
And if I, if I've been unkind
I hope that you will let it go by
And if I, if I've been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you
So I swear by this song
I swear by all I did wrong
I will make it
I will make it all up to thee
Like a bird on a wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I've tried in my way to be free.
Words and music by Leonard Cohen
Horray, hooray...
Well it's the land of the "Rolls" and the "Jaguar"
The only town I know where a "Caddy" is a poor man's car
The girls have got those seven inch Kama Sutra finger nails
The way they walk around you know a man could use for spinning reels
It's like that old song says "Hooray for Hollywood"
I came out here about a month ago for my very first visit
I knew I'd come back for more
I went back to Minneapolis bein' checked out by my friends
They wanted to know if I was still that same
Sweet, shy, modest, guiet kid I'd always been
I said it's like the old song says "Hooray for Hollywood"
Now all you need is talent, good looks and nerve
With a little luck you get just what you deserve
My manager will tell you I'm a genius
I'm as pretty as I can be
So get the cement ready down at Grauman's Chinese
And it's like that old song says "Hooray for Hollywood"
I want a mansion with a palm tree out in my front yard
My name spelled right for once on Sunset Boulevard
I want an antique Bentley and a row of debutantes
You knwo you can have anything you can ask for
If you got something they want
It's like that old song says "Hooray for Hollywood"
Hooray hooray...
Words and music by David McKenzie
Yonder come my landlord collecting his rent
With his greedy yellow eyes and his tongue all bent
With his padlocked pockets and his badluck nose
Comes sniffin' round my doorway and goin' through my clothes
Oh how could you treat me so cold
Got a mortgage on my body and a lien on my soul
I got a crackpot house with a two way roof
My neighbours are thieves but I got no proof
You like to take but you don't want to give
I've got to pay you rent just to have a place to live
Ah but hey you landlord I know you well
You run a rock'n roll' tavern and a fancy hotel
You misuse a lot of people that you got at your command
I'll put on a pair of gloves 'fore I shake your hand
You're gonna wake up in the helpless dawn
And look around and find that your land is all gone
You wanna be cold just as cold as you please
Will come next winter, you're gonna freeze

Seem To Miss So Much (Coalminer's Song)
There have been times
When it's been rainin'
When Lord I swear
I've never been touched
Don't get me wrong
I'm not compaining, it's just
That I always seem to miss so much
There have been times
When I've been searchin'
Searchin' in the darkness
For someone to touch
Don't get me wrong
I'm not hurtin', it's just
That I always seem to miss so much
When looking up
I find
I'm one step ahead
And two behind
When looking down
I see one small shadow
It looks a lot like me
There will come a time
When it's all over
When my good-byes
Become a must
No I won't cry
Because I'm sorry, it's just
That I always seem to miss so much
I'm one step ahead
And two behind.
Words and music by R.Kirby Jr./Sam Fox
Hey Lord won't trouble never end?
Tell me are you still my friend?
I've got such a heavy load
When will I reach that glory road?
One more mountain to climb
One more river to cross
I've come such a long long way still here
I've got a long way to go
Weary all the times
I've been tumbled and tossed
There's always one more mountain to climb
One more river to cross
Hey Lord I'm nothing but a man
I've tried to do the best I can
Sometimes the road is hard to see
Please Lord won't you walk along with me?

Don't Give Up On Us

Don't give up on us baby
Don't make the wrong seem right
The future isn't just one night
It's written in the moonlight
And painted on the stars
We can't change ours
Don't give up on us baby
We're still worth one more try
And though we put the last one by
Just for a rainy evening
When maybe stars are few
Don't give up on us
I know we can still come through
I nearly lost my head last night
You've got a right to stop believing
There's still a little love left even so
Don't give up on us baby
Lord knows we've come this far
Can't we stay the way we are
The angel and the dreamer
Who sometimes plays the fool
Don't give up on us
I know we can still come through
It's written in the moonlight
And painted on the stars
We can't change ours
Don't give up on us...
Words and music by Tony Macaulay
Turn off the music
Turn up the light
Go put your shoes on
While I open the door
You'll shake my hand as I wish you good-night
And find myself lonely once more
Oh well what the hell
Some other evening, some other time
It's time for a bottle and a moment of silence
For another ex lover of mine
You weren't the first one God knows there've been more
Remember a few nights, forgotten the rest
The day that I met you I stopped keepin' score
Pretending that you were the best
Oh well...
I've looked for perfection in ev'ry hotel room
Polite desperation clouds all that I say
My life ends up reading like a cheap dime story novel
Romance in the moonlight
Disappears with the day
But just like a good man, I still keep on searching
For someone to love me, a hand for my hand
I keep on believing that our love has changed
And I'll be on my feet when I land
Oh well...
Words and music by Amanda McBroom back to top
Patchwork curtains; paisley tweed and rose...
Blowing, stained glass, a song by you
A rooster crows, a rootee-too and a mew far off away,
Cats walking out to see the day
LA on the hills, the sun between them
It's coming up to see, it's coming up to me
LA on the hills, Topanga waking up
Waking up to me
A face behind me looking through a screen
Topanga sunrise song by you,
The patchwork curtain mornings of our lives,
And there you are
Bringing us our day in color
Rocks and trees and streams
Topanga reaching out
It's reaching out to me
Oh, it's reaching out to me
LA on the hills, Topanga waking up
Waking up, waking up to me
Words and music by Gardner McKay/David Soul
All I want is black bean soup
And you to make it with me
Honey won't you
Be my love while love will stay
And wear your ribbons for me
Boil those black beans, honey
Mash them up real well
One big soft tomato
Just a handful of sorrel, well
Cut up your chilly pepper
Squeeze that garlic smell
One mouthful of drippings
A granddaddy onion and well, well, well
All I want...
Well I've been kicked in the head a few times
But that just made me high
I believe in the good things now
You know black bean soup don't lie, lie, lie....
Words and music by Gardner McKay/David Soul
Kristofer David went walking one day
On a grassy knoll underneath the sun
He skipped through the carpet of daffodils and daisies
Lookin' for the ladybug of love
He met Spencer the spider, dressed all in black
Weaving his web of sorrow
"Have you seen the ladybug of love?"
"My web grumbled in and would not hold her"
Kristofer David went running on his way
He left Spencer dangling by a thread
He played with the branches of the trees bending gracefully
In the frisky spring-time wind
He found Selma the snail, hiding in a shell
And asked her if the ladybug was with her
"No" came a tiny voice shyly from within
"I'm only having tea with myself"
Kristofer David left Selma sadly slipping
Trough a field of blue-forget-me-nots
Then off to the quiet pond beyond the four-leaved-clover
Maybe there he'd find the ladybug of love
Just then Willard the wasp came swooping through the air
He bullied everybody with his stinger
"Have you seen the ladybug of love?"
"Love? Now baby don't you know that love can really sting you?"
Kristofer David left Willard preening proudly
There were the gold narcissus grow
He leaped over sticks and stones leading down a dusty road
Still lookin' for the ladybug of love
He met Gurdy the grasshopper, the biggest mouth around
Boring everybody with her gossip
"I've just seen that so called ladybug
Spreading her love much to freely"
Kristofer David left Gurdy green with envy
'Cause the ladybug had love that she had not
Then he heard a small voice giggling
And looked upon his shoulder
There sat the ladybug of love
That's when he knew she'd been with him all the time
'Cause love's with you anywhere you go
Then Kristofer David and the ladybug
Sailed off on a cloud made of love
