This is a movie about a tap dancer and his best friend, a little dancing dog called Spot. Steps, the tap dancer (played by Ron Moody) meets up with Pritt (played by David Soul), a former prize fighter, who has now been reduced to taking on any job he can find to make his meagre living, or else plays his harmonica outside cafes for tips.

These two tramps decide to travel together around Canada, to pool their fortunes. Then disaster srikes. Steps loses Spot, only to discover that he's been picked up as a stray, and taken to a dog pound. Steps is disolate, so Pritt offers to help raise the money needed to get Spot back. And so their unlikely partnership begins. They decide to move around from town to town, playing and dancing as a double act at the various bars they come accross. The money is very slow in coming in, though, and the longer they leave it, the higher the price that must be paid to get Spot out of the pound.

Just when it all seems completely hopeless, a stranger offers them enough money to buy Spot back if they perform at a society party. It's as if their dreams are coming true. Pritt gets the chance to play his harmonica through a proper amplification system in front of a hundred enthusiastic guests, while Step dances on a marble floor accompanied by a live band. With their fee in hand, they race back to the pound to pick up Spot - only to find that he has been given away to a family who wants to care for him. All their efforts have been in vain - Stardom awaits but no Spot to share it with! ...... guess how it continues???
